Dear Yahoo!:
A friend of mine says she often listens to live music on the Web. How do I find out what's playing online, and do I need special hardware to enjoy the show?

Dear Ready:
There are several places to learn about what's happening "live" on the Internet, whether it's live streaming audio or a taped replay of a previously recorded performance. Yahoo! Events allows you to see a schedule of the day's online events, as well as search or browse listings by subject. So if you're interested in finding out if there's a reggae concert coming up anytime soon, you'll be able to get an easy answer.

Another good sound source is AudioNet, especially their music channel. Here you'll find times and links for current and upcoming shows, plus a healthy archive of past concerts, ready to roll on demand. At AudioNet, you'll also find a nice list of frequently asked questions -- just click on "First Time User?"

Finally, to answer your question about hardware: Most home computers built in the last year or so should be ready for streaming audio and video. If your system has speakers, chances are you're good to go. On the software side, you'll probably need to download one or two of the most common streaming audio/video formats, RealNetworks' RealPlayer or Microsoft's NetShow.
