Dear Yahoo!:
What is the meaning of Spice Girl Mel C's tattoo?
Wannabe Informed
Scottsdale, Arizona
Dear Wannabe:
The problem here is figuring out just which tattoo you are referring to. (Not to mention figuring out which Spice Girl is Mel C.) Here's our best shot:

By visiting a few of the approximately 50 billion Spice Girls fan sites, we learned that Mel C (not to be confused with Mel B) is otherwise known as Sporty Spice. Next, we proceeded to the Sporty Spice Yahoo! category. There, a quick survey of some of the sites told us that the Sportster has several tattoos. The most visible of which are a Celtic band on her right arm, a Celtic cross on her left arm, two Chinese characters on her right shoulder, and an English word scribbled across the Sporty midriff.

Suprisingly, the latter seems to be the tattoo in question. Apparently, the tattoo was unveiled to the world without a press release or any revelatory details from Mel, thus causing legions of Spice Fans to scurry around squinting intensely at their favorite tabloids. Luckily, a few weeks later the mystery word was revealed. It turns out that the inscription reads "Angel." For the whole story, including photos and interview excerpts, check out 100% Melanie. There we also learned that the Chinese characters stand for "woman" and "strength" or, in Spicetalk, "girl power."
