Dear Yahoo!:
What's the deal with web-based email versus regular email?
Surfer Dude

Dear Dude:
For starters, one difference between web-based email and "regular" email is location, location, location. A web-based email account lets you access your mail from any computer connected to the Web, which might explain the name. And web-connected computers seem to be popping up all over the place these days: schools, libraries, cafes, hotel lobbies, shopping malls, and even airports.

Unlike "regular" or "POP" email, which requires specific preferences to be entered into the email software, web-based email only requires a web connection. Your email is still protected by a password, and you can still view your personal email address list. Check your email from work, home or even abroad while travelling.

Picture this, Surfer Dude: with a web-based email account you could wake up at dawn, check your email on your home computer, go surfing, check your email in your school's computer lab, go surfing, check your email at the public library, go surfing, check your email from a friend's house, then call it a day.

We're partial to Yahoo!'s free email service, Yahoo! Mail, but any web search on the phrase "free email" should yield dozens of opportunities. Surf on, Dude!
