There certainly is a vast amount of investment information available online today. It looks like more and more people are turning to the Internet to research stocks and mutual funds, to plan their retirement portfolios, or simply to learn about investing in general. And yes, apparently whisper numbers -- those mythical, behind-closed-doors earnings estimates only available to Wall Street analysts and their wealthiest clients -- are also available, in some form or another, online. But before we tell you where we found them, keep in mind that you must be extraordinarily careful about any investment information you come across online. Be very sure of the source, especially in the highly speculative world of stock picking. Ask yourself, who is telling me this news? Can I trust them? The
Internet can be (and is) an effective investing tool, but you should always attempt to filter the fact from the fiction. That said, here goes: Try a web site called none other than Whisper Numbers. The last time we checked, they had a fairly long list of stocks listed by sector, with whisper numbers included. Before acting on anything you read there, be sure to visit the site's disclaimer, which includes the following sentence: "The whisper numbers are based on speculation, opinion and research." For even more speculation, troll the message boards at the popular Silicon Investor web site. You must be a paying member to post messages, but it's free to read any of them. Right before a
company's earnings are released, you'll often find messages at SI announcing whisper numbers. Sometimes they're accurate; sometimes they're not.
