Dear Yahoo!:
Maybe you can help me. For months now I've been asking people I know how to refer to the first two decades of the new millenium, i.e., Twenties, Thirties, etc. Everyone I've asked seems to have a different opinion. Some are quite ridiculous.

Dear Bobby:
Here at Yahoo!, we spend a lot of time thinking about what to call things. Our categories are filled with subjects that could've been named any number of things. Take our "Movies and Film" category, for instance. We could've called it "Movies" (simplest) or "Film" (shortest) or "Motion Pictures" (stodgiest) or "Cinema" (snootiest), but after hundreds of hours of exhaustive debate and research (we watched the Star Wars trilogy over two dozen times!), we finally decided on "Movies and Film."

Now, the reason we mention this example (besides stalling for time) is to illustrate the all-important concept that people are gonna call stuff a whole different bunch of names at various times. It all depends on context, current trends, and personal whimsy.

As to your specific situation: yes, the early years of the next century don't fit neatly into the current naming convention, but that doesn't mean people won't figure out something to call them. Maybe it'll be "the ohs" or "the zeroes" or "the oh-oh-ohs" or "the aughts" or maybe "the Gore years" or possibly "the Yahoo! era." In any case, you'll know what to call those decades when they arrive. Until then, you'll just have to speculate like the rest of us. We're thinking maybe "the Leos¿"
