Dear Yahoo!:
Is there any way to check my bank balance online?
Peter
Paducah, Kentucky
Dear Peter:
The answer to your question is a definite "yes" and/or "no." It all depends on which bank you use. Many of the larger multi-state banks offer online banking, in the form of account monitoring, transfers, and automatic bill payment. Fewer, yet on the increase, are local banks that allow users to interact with their accounts via the Web. There are also several "Internet-only" banks out there that, obviously, give their customers full access to their statements over the Internet.

It's probably safe to assume that you're not currently signed up for the latter, so your best bet is to call your bank and ask about their online banking options. They should have information about any required software and fees. For a quick indication of banks that offer online balance and transaction access, check out the Online Banking Report's list of True Internet Banks. You can also investigate Yahoo!'s Internet Banking category.
