Dear Yahoo!:
What are the top ten stocks on the NYSE in terms of market capitalization and also in terms of market appreciation in 1997?
Mallesh
New Delhi, India
Dear Mallesh:
We've got good news and bad news. The good news first: You can find the stocks with the largest market caps on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or all exchanges by doing a simple search on Hoover's StockScreener. Just fill in a minimum market cap (say 5 billion dollars), choose the NYSE from the drop-down box, and click on the search button. You'll get a listing of large-cap stocks, sorted alphabetically. To find the ten largest, simply click on the down arrow under the "Market Value" header. That will sort the results by value, in descending order. If you see names like General Electric, Coca-Cola, and Wal-Mart, then you know you're in the right neighborhood.

Beyond market cap, StockScreener allows you to do much more sophisticated searches. You can set minimums and maximums for fields such as Profit-to-Earnings Ratio, Profit Margin, Revenue Growth, and many more. You can also start with one search and then refine it through additional queries, finally arriving at a manageable handful of stocks that you might be likely to invest in.

Unfortunately, one-year market appreciation is not one of the fields supported by Hoover's web site. Hopefully, with all of the other available fields, you should still be able to find stocks that performed well over the last 12 months.
