Genealogy, or the study of family histories, is a very popular subject on the Net. Within Yahoo!'s Genealogy category you'll find more than 2000 sites dedicated to the cultivation of detailed family trees. Approximately three-quarters of those sites are individual families or researchers focused on a single surname. You'll find those sites listed alphabetically under the Lineages and Surnames subcategory. If you find that no one is currently researching your family history, you may be interested in beginning your own genealogical project. If so, you'll want to check out sites like Ancestry.com.
There, you can search by specific first and last name or just by surname and geographic locale. The site will return a list of matches for both its free and subscription databases. Don't be deterred by the hint of commercialism, you may find the information listed in the free databases is more than enough to get you on your way, and for the diehard amateur genealogist, a subscription may very well turn out to be a bargain. Another nice resource for beginners is Cyndi's List, a cornucopia of basic genealogical knowledge such as FAQs, columns and home page templates, combined with a dazzling array of related links. Cyndi's categories include everything from adoption to family bibles to obituaries to taxes. If there's a source where you can
find a scrap of genealogical information and it's on the Net, you can bet that Cyndi's got it.
