Those delightful words that denote groups of items or creatures are called "collective nouns." Search on that phrase and you'll find an entire Yahoo! category (under English > Grammar, Usage, and Style) devoted to these terms. Each of the sites in the category provides a long list of collective nouns, and while none of them claim to be exhaustive, an impressive list can be found at The Collective Noun Page. They offer a great mix of actual accepted terms and user suggestions. Speaking of which, the only user suggestion we could find relating to the Internet
was "a charlotte of webpages" and, frankly, we suspect that our intrepid Ask Yahoo! readers can do a bit better than that. So, if you've got a potential collective noun for groups of Internet-related items (web sites, search engines, search results, email, web surfers, etc.), then drop us a line at nouns@yahoo-inc.com. The best entries will, naturally, make their way into a future Ask Yahoo! column.
