By popping the phrase "Presidential Unit Citation" into a search engine, we came up with surprisingly few quality results. Sure, there were some military units whose web sites included past citations that they'd received, but very few sites seemed to offer any kind of descriptions of military awards. Luckily, there was one site that listed medals and in some cases provided explanations of their meanings. The Marine Corps Wives Website includes several pages of medals, complete with photos, titles, and further information. You'll find this feature under the left-hand frame's "Knowledge" heading -- just click on "Marine Medals." We checked the "Presidential
Meritorious Unit Citation," and read the description of the Presidential Unit Citation: ¿ for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. The unit must have displayed such gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions to have set it apart and above other units participating in the same campaign. Finally, you might contact the military branch your husband served in during the war, as they should be able to point your toward his unit's official history. It's just not likely to be online. For more on the people, places, and battles of WWII, check out Yahoo!'s World
War II category. You'll find a plethora of sites that include historical archives, personal accounts, and much more.
