Dear Yahoo!:
How many years after a player retires is it before he can be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame? I want to be there when Ozzie Smith goes in.
Todd
St. Louis, Missouri
Dear Todd:
If there's one thing we love here at Yahoo!, it's questions about baseball. To find you an answer, we went to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, which we found through a simple search for "baseball hall fame."

First, we noticed a listing of the class of '99: Nolan Ryan, Robin Yount, George Brett, Joe Williams, Orlando Cepeda, Nestor Chylak, and Frank Selee. Judging by those first few players, who retired just a few years ago, the waiting period isn't extraordinarily long.

Still, the current crop of inductees didn't give us any concrete indication of the waiting period, so we checked the ever-useful "Frequently Asked Questions" link. There we found an entry for "Who is eligible to get into the Hall in the year 2000?" This list gave us further clues (Dave Henderson, Kent Hrbek, Jack Morris, Jeff Reardon, and Steve Sax, among others), but still no definitive answer.

Finally, we clicked on "Rules for Election." Paragraph 3, item A reads as follows:

"(A) A baseball player must have been active as a player in the Major Leagues at some time during a period beginning twenty (20) years before and ending five (5) years prior to election."

So, there you go. Ozzie retired in 1996. His first shot at Hall of Fame election is 2001, with induction in 2002. Reserve your seats at Cooperstown now.
