We began by typing "Morris Canal" into the Yahoo! search box. We didn't find any relevant Yahoo! categories or web sites matches, so we were taken to search results provided by Inktomi, the search engine that finds web pages when direct matches are not found in Yahoo!'s categorized database. Inktomi turned up some informative sites about historic canals and their significance for American commerce and transport in the early 1800s, before the days of railroads. At the National Canal Museum in Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, we learned that the Morris Canal, completed in 1832 and abandoned in the 1920s, crossed New Jersey, carried iron ore to the coal fields and hauled anthracite coal to Philadelphia and New York. After a little looking around, we
eventually found a very detailed Rand McNally profile map of the canal from 1921, as well as a host of other information about the waterway.
