Dear Yahoo!:
Is there an online lexicon of fine arts and architecture or a dictionary of arts terminology?

Dear Mia:
Your question gave us a good excuse to explore the realm of arts resources on the Web. We began by browsing Yahoo! for a category to match your question, which led us down the path Arts > Reference > Dictionaries.

We found a variety of resources for the vocabulary of arts and architecture:

ArtLex, a dictionary of visual art, defines thousands of art terms and provides thoughtful links to images, illustrations and relevant quotations. We looked up "gouache," a heavy, opaque watercolor paint, and visited examples of gouache painting from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Along the way we read about the Golden Mean and noted an entry on the subject of Gothic art and architecture.

Words of Art: An Online Glossary of Theory and Criticism for the Visual Arts, a text-based lexicon of academic, critical vocabulary led us to information on Freud and Foucault, but nothing about the Futurists. Whereas, on a quick-reference page titled Art Movements and Periods we found Futurism, as well as Fauvism and folk art.

Michael Durkin's Architectural Terms is a handy glossary of English architectural vocabulary. For a grander view of the human-built world, visit the Digital Archive of Architecture, and feast your eyes on an encyclopedia of images and information about buildings from Stonehenge to the great cathedrals, from Versailles to the Centre Pompidou.
