Dear Yahoo!:
Did Lizzie Borden kill her parents?
Sarah
New York, New York
Dear Sarah:
You must be questioning the veracity of the classic nursery rhyme:
Lizzie Borden took an axe
gave her mother forty whacks
when she saw what she had done
she gave her father forty one.

After a cold, hard look at Crime Library's Lizzie Borden file, a few facts become apparent. On a hot August day in 1892, in the pastoral town of Fall River, Massachusetts, the bodies of Andrew and Abby Borden were found horribly mutilated in their home. Both had been slain by the use of "some sharp and terrible instrument" which had been applied liberally to their cranial regions.

Within a week, police arrested their 32-year-old daughter Lizzie for the crime, but she was acquitted after a sensational murder trial. In spite of the acquittal, the community of Fall River shunned Lizzie for the rest of her life. Lizzie and her surviving sister split their inheritance, and they died within a few days of each other in June 1927.

Did Lizzie bury the hatchet? Truth is, we'll never know. Interested sleuths are invited to spend a weekend at the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast.
