Dear Yahoo!:
What's all the hype with Lilith Fair? Who was Lilith and why does she have a concert named after her?
Nicole
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Dear Nicole:
Legends claim that Lilith was Adam's first wife, but unlike Eve, she was created, not as an afterthought from her partner's rib, but right alongside him from the dust of the earth. Yet unfortunately, as the mythology goes, Lilith's demands for equality and her refusal to submit to Adam's authority led to her banishment from Eden.

First off, we entered "Lilith Fair" into the Yahoo! search box, which turned up categories for both the mythological Lilith (under Mythology and Folklore > Lilith) and the festival named for her (under Music > Events > Festivals).

We also found Lilith Fair in Yahoo! News as a Full Coverage feature, offering current articles from a variety of sources and reporting on the 40-stop, 1999 all-women concert tour, which opens in Vancouver, Canada on July 8.

The festival has recently come under attack by Jerry Falwell's National Liberty Journal for its support of Planned Parenthood, its distribution of condoms at fair venues, and its eponymous homage to a heathen demoness. For a Jewish/Pagan perspective on the legendary Lilith, visit the Lilith Shrine; for a host of primary sources see Alan Humm's Lilith index.
