You're looking for The Last Hurrah by Edwin O'Connor. We simply entered "Frank Skeffington" into a search engine -- a proper name like that is a great clue. Once we found the name and the book title on the same page, we checked Amazon.com and the Internet Movie Database to read short summaries and reviews of the novel and the movie adaptation. Going back to the Web, we eventually found a photo of O'Connor and a reproduction of the original book cover on the Book of the Month Club site. That should bring back memories¿
