Dear Yahoo!:
Why do my brother's shoes stink?
Jen
Terreton, Indiana
Dear Jen:
We figured that to find the cause of offensive shoe aromas, you've got to go straight to the foot of the matter.

When our search on Yahoo! for "foot odor" kicked up a few results in the commercial Foot Care category, we noted that there was an entire industry dedicated to solving your brother's problem, but no answers why. So, we switched tactics and took the scientific approach.

In Yahoo!'s Anatomy category, we found the Yuckiest Site on the Internet. A section titled Your Gross & Cool Body offers kid-friendly information on just about every bodily function, so we followed our nose to Stinky Pits, and found foot odor described as a sweaty mixture of bacteria, fungi, and dead skin cells.

Then we hit the jackpot -- a page called Feet Stink. Foot odor is the scent produced by a sockful of microbes with names like Brevibacteria-linen; we even learned how to grow our very own horrible foot smell in a jar. What a treat.
