To find the answer, we simply searched on "wizard of oz" and were rewarded with three Yahoo! categories: one about the movie, one for memorabilia, and one about the book by Frank L. Baum. Assuming the movie category would provide us with the most extensive list of sites and lead us to the promised land, we mustered the courage and clicked on the category. The links
looked hopeful, especially the official Wizard of Oz site. Imagine our disappointment when it turned out to be more of a gift store than anything else -- no trivia or history to be found. The other sites offered some interesting facts and trivia but had very little to say about flying monkeys. Our hearts fell. Using our brain, we figured it was time to check out The Wonderful Wizard of Oz book category. Only a few sites, but we had a gut feeling we'd find what we were looking for. Once we arrived at the Wonderful Wizard of Oz Website, we
immediately clicked on Questions and Answers and then headed to Oz Characters. We scanned the 20 questions and finally found what we needed. Turns out the flying monkeys don't have an unusual or exotic tribal name. In the Oz books, they're just called flying monkeys or winged monkeys and they aren't named. However, in the movie the leader is named Nikko. We learned that Nikko is listed in the credits, even though his character was never referred to by name. On last tidbit: Nikko was played by Pat Walshe.
