Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I find a map of the U.S. showing all the Indian territories and tribes?
Jil
Reno, Nevada
Dear Jil:
After perusing Yahoo!'s extensive category devoted to web sites about Native Americans, we found the American Indian Resources Index. There, under the "Maps" heading, we discovered a link to Maps of Native American Nations, a collection of contemporary and historic maps of tribal lands and reservations in North America.

The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs offers maps of Indian Lands in the United States; we also located census data for the Top 25 American Indian Tribes for the United States, but these numbers are from the 1990 census, so we're due for some fresher figures soon.

There are approximately 275 Indian reservations in the U.S. The largest is the Navajo Reservation of some 16 million acres of land, but many of the smaller reservations are less than 1,000 acres. On each reservation, the local governing authority is the tribal government.

You can stay up to date on current events and issues such as gaming and sovereignty rights on our Full Coverage page of Native American News.
