Dear Yahoo!:
Who came up with the idea of the teddy bear?
Alison
North Carolina
Dear Alison:
Well, we weren't exactly sure if you meant the idea of toy bears or the idea of calling toy bears "teddy bears," but in any case, we hunted down some info on the cuddly companions.

We thought that "teddy bear history" was a pretty good phrase to search for, so we gave it a shot. There were thousands of results, but several of the top listings proved useful.

The National Museum of American History provides a short explanation of the term "Teddy bear." Apparently, toymakers Rose and Morris Michtom learned that then-President Teddy Roosevelt had spared a bear cub while on a hunting trip and they decided to create a toy commemorating the event.

We also did a search on "the history of toys" and found a great site called History of Toys and Games from the History Channel. They give even more background on Roosevelt's legendary hunting trip and the "Teddy Bear mania" that followed.
