Dear Yahoo!:
What does netiquette say about forwarding items such as virus warnings, urban legends, chain letters, etc.? If a person requests not to forward messages to her, should that request be respected in all cases?

Dear Michele:
A quick browse through Yahoo!'s Netiquette category offered several handy pointers. We consulted the illustrious Netiquette Home Page for some information on email forwards. Here's the skinny:

Your guiding tenet for forwarding emails to friends and associates should be, "Know your audience." It's perfectly respectable to forward loads of goofy sound files, naughty pictures, lame jokes, chain letters, etc. to your friends as long as you know they're okay with it.

But when in doubt, don't send it. Especially when your friend has requested to "unsubscribe." We're all deluged with tons of useless information every day. Spamming large groups of people on a regular basis is a lazy and potentially offensive practice. Many people prefer not to share their email address with large groups of people, some of whom may be strangers.

The Netiquette chapter on Electronic Mail tackles the finer points of file enclosures, urgent flags, CCs, and more. Give it a look. Then delete those emails about hairless rats and $300 cookie recipes.
