We've heard about height-conscious Hollywood actors: Platform boots, camera angles, and an insistence on shorter co-stars are frequently mentioned tricks of the trade used by the vertically challenged leading man. But not "The Duke." Turns out that John Wayne, icon of American virtue and western macho, didn't have to fake sitting tall in the saddle. To answer your question, we began with a Yahoo! search on "John Wayne." We browsed through the John Wayne category in Yahoo!'s directory, looking diligently for biographical or statistical information. We found the answer at a site simply titled John
Wayne. Scrolling down to the bottom of the page, we found a FAQ that reported the Duke stood 6'4" and wore a size-11 boot. We went back to the category listings to find another site that would verify our answer. The biography page at The Duke - A Tribute to John Wayne confirmed our findings. Pilgrim, he sure wasn't 5'6". From that same bio, we found out that his real name was Marion Morrison. No wonder we knew him as John Wayne.
