This question proved to be about as difficult as an empty-net goal. Lace up your skates and prepare to visit a bunch of sites that explain the rules of Canada's national pastime. First, we did a Yahoo! search on the phrase "hockey rules" and found exactly what we were looking for. The Ice Hockey Rules category offers a handful of sites devoted to explaining mysterious terms like "icing," "offsides," and "two-line passes." ESPN's NHL Rules is a great place to start. It provides a glossary of hockey terms, explanations of different types of penalties, and video clips illustrating
some of the finer points of the game. The National Hockey League also provides a nice look at the rules. It's a little more in-depth than the ESPN page, so if you're curious about things like how wide the blade of a goalie's stick can be, you'll find the answer here. (Three-and-a-half inches, by the way.) We also recommend that you check out the Hockey Glossary, a complete list of hockey-related terms. This should put you well on your way to a better understanding of high-sticking, spearing, and cross-checking. Once you understand the rules, the game should become much more enjoyable. We expect that in no time at all you'll be screaming "Hey
linesman! He was in the crease!" just like a seasoned fan.
