Laser eye surgery may sound like science fiction, but in fact it's an increasingly popular elective procedure. For people who must wear glasses or contacts to see clearly, the idea of having unaided 20/20 vision is an amazing proposition. To see what all the hub-bub is about, we began with a Yahoo! search on the phrase "eye laser surgery." The first few matches were sites for different clinics that offer the service, but we wanted to find a category that dealt with general information on the procedure. We scrolled down and found that Yahoo! has a category for Eye Surgery. After browsing through a few of the sites in the category,
we spied the answer at The Vision Correction Website. We clicked on the link for "LASIK Laser Surgery" for a detailed diagram on how the process works. Apparently, to begin the procedure, the cornea of the eye is shaved down and a flap is cut. After the flap is pulled back, a laser is used to remove excess tissue as well as reshape and flatten out the cornea. If you want to know what a normal cornea looks like, Vision Correction offers some useful diagrams. For additional information, we visited the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance, which provides a great FAQ about laser
eye surgery. If you have any questions about the procedure, most likely they're covered here. You can find the odds for ending up with 20/20 vision and also learn about the risks associated with the procedure. Finally, another good place for insight on laser eye surgery is Yahoo!'s Eye Surgery > Personal Experience category. There you'll find firsthand accounts from people who've had LASIK surgery. If you're considering the procedure, this category could go a long way toward helping you make a final decision.
