Dear Yahoo!:
What are the most popular first and last names in the U.S.?
Eponymous
Panama City, Florida
Dear Eponymous:
A simple Yahoo! search on "most popular names," (using quotation marks around the term) led us to a long list of potentially helpful sites, including BabyCenter. Hoping to track down a current list of popular names, we visited BabyCenter and followed a link to the Popular Names Index, where we immediately found a list of the most popular baby names of 1999.

Girls Boys
Emily Jacob
Sarah Michael
Brianna Matthew
Samantha Nicholas
Hailey Christopher

That was good start, but we still had some digging to do. We noticed a link at the bottom of the page that said, "Popular names provided by Michael Shackleford of the Social Security Administration." We clicked on the link and were excited to see that this site had a plethora of additional information. For instance, it lists the top three names of each year from 1900 - 1997. You can also learn the top 1,000 names for each decade of the 1900s.

To find the most popular last names, we headed to the U.S. Census web site and did a search on "surnames," which returned only two results. However, when we clicked on the Genealogy link, we found just what we were looking for: "frequently occurring first names and surnames of the 1990 census."

Here are the top five last names from 1990:

  1. Smith
  2. Johnson
  3. Williams
  4. Jones
  5. Brown
To see which names round out the top 10, as well as the most popular male and female names according the 1990 census, be sure and scroll down to the bottom of the page.
