Dear Yahoo!:
How can I grow avocados from seeds? Avocados are extremely expensive. I'd like to grow them for my family.
Mary Ellen
Corpus Christi, Texas
Dear Mary Ellen:
We found the answer to your question in four easy steps! Here's how:

1. Type in "avocado" in the Yahoo! search bar.

2. Notice the California Avocado Commission link in the Avocado Organizations category. Raise eyebrow. Click on the link.

3. On the welcome page of the California Avocado Commission ("Avocados are HOT! But You Always Knew That!"), scroll down to a link to the Frequently Asked Questions page. Say, "Hmm." Click on the link.

4. In response to the question, "Is it possible to grow an avocado from a seed?," read the following extremely sobering response, "It is possible to grow an avocado from seed, just don't let it dry out, but keep in mind that avocados planted from seed take anywhere from 5 to 13 years before they flower and produce fruit."

Looks like they've got us right where they want us. Avocados are pricey, Mary Ellen, but your youngsters could be in college by the time your first avocado is harvested. Still, if you have the patience, you'll find growing tips on this FAQ page.

If you have just a little patience, consider investing in an avocado tree. Expect to see your first fruit after 3 to 4 years. The climate should be just right in Corpus Christi. Good luck!
