We started with a Yahoo! search on "toppled elephant," and received absolutely nothing -- not even a single web page from the Inktomi search results. We decided to try some of the "Other Search Engines" listed at the bottom of the Yahoo! search results page. Working from left to right, we clicked on the Alta Vista link and, once again, no search results. Next we clicked the Direct Hit link, and to our delight there was a link that looked extremely promising. We went to a page about the Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière Basilica and quickly found
an answer to your question. The Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière Basilica, in Lyon, France, is an eclectic 1870 cathedral nicknamed "the toppled elephant" from an expression by Huysmans. With a massive form, it is flanked by four towers each symbolizing a cardinal virtue. To the south-west is the tower of Justice, to the north-west is Strength, the north-east represents Prudence, and the south-east is Temperance. We turned up some additional photos of the hilltop Lyonnaise landmark. We wanted to know who "Huysmans" was, so we went to Britannica.com and searched on the name. The first article was about a late-19th-century
French writer named Joris-Karl Huysmans. A noted novelist and art critic, he is undoubtedly the Huysmans who coined the nickname.
