A simple Yahoo! search on "Oscars" proved to be a winner. The results led us to Yahoo!'s Academy Awards category. Once there, we noticed that Oscar.com had sunglasses next to it, a sure-fire sign the site is worth a look, so we headed that way. At the official Oscar site, we immediately went to the History section. We started counting our lucky stars when we saw the Ask The Historian link. We scanned the questions and, for a minute, thought we had the answer. Q: Who has had the most Academy Award
nominations without ever taking home a statuette? A: Art director Roland Anderson was nominated a record 15 times without a win. Composer Alex North also had 15 nominations without a competitive win but in 1985 Mr. North received an Honorary Oscar statuette. Interesting, but you explicitly asked which "actor" had the most nominations, so we went back to the Academy Awards category and clicked on the intriguing LittleGoldenGuy.com. We quickly realized the site lacked an easy way to find the answer -- no FAQ, History, or Ask The Historian sections here. However, we discovered an interesting solution. The site's search tool allows users to customize search criteria. Our first search looked like this:
"Which person received the most nominations for Any Female Acting between 1927/1928 and 1999? Next, we changed the criteria to search for "Any Male Acting" between 1927/1928 (the first year the Awards were presented) and 1999. We deduced that Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton share the ignominious honor, each with seven nominations and zero wins. If we break it down by gender, Deborah Kerr leads the women with six nominations and no wins.
