Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I find information about getting a professional record deal?
Matt
Midland Park, New Jersey
Dear Matt:
We suggest you start with the Yahoo! Music Industry Resources category. You'll find an array of sites offering tips and tricks on demo recording, getting gigs, promoting your band, and evaluating record contracts. But before you do anything, read this cautionary tale from producer Steve Albini.

Still want to tangle with the music industry? At the risk of sounding reductive, here are five easy steps to getting signed:

Practice, practice, practice. If you're looking for some like-minded peers, the DIY Search site has a number of forums for dedicated musicians to trade advice.

Cut a demo. Check the Indiecentre for plenty of hands-on details about recording, mastering, and printing your own record. Cutting your own CD has never been easier -- visit the Yahoo! Music Recording category for more advice.

Hit the road. Every musician has to spend lots of time in a van. The Musician's Assistant Site offers some information and resources for musicians launching their own tour.

Spread the word. Once you've been getting regular gigs locally, it's time to promote your band globally. "Get a Record Deal Today," an informative if overly optimistic article from ZDNet, covers the ins and outs of promoting your band on the Web. Step one: set up a web site.

Get a lawyer. Getsigned.com features a number of handy legal resources including dummy contracts and a glossary of terms, but you're going to need some professional help. For example, R.E.M.'s lawyer, Bertis Downs, has been an integral part of the band's success. You got to (get someone else to) represent.
