We thought we'd stumbled across a horseshoe category in Yahoo! before, so we headed to the directory and drilled down through the Entertainment > Games category until we found Horseshoe Pitching. The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association site sounded authoritative and, sure enough, they offer a link to the sport's Official Rules. Happily, the site also provides just about everything you ever wanted to know about horseshoes, with invaluable game etiquette, handy
tips for spectators, and a guide to finding a place to pitch some shoes in your neck of the woods. Next, we headed over to Britannica.com for a little horseshoe history. There, we learned that the game may have grown out of quoits, played by Roman officers during the Roman occupation of Britain. Quoits involved throwing a ring, usually made of iron, around a stake, or hob. Horseshoes tended to be more readily available than quoits and quickly took their place. So after you're done perusing the rules, get out the ol' shoes and start pitching. And remember,
close does count in horseshoes (as well as a few other select activities).
