Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I learn what the World War II rank bar and medals from my father's uniform mean?
Mary
Westerville, Ohio
Dear Mary:
We headed over to the Yahoo! directory, clicked through to the Government > Military category, and discovered a great resource called Rank Insignia. Basically just a list of web sites that feature pictures of various countries' rank insignia, the site included a link to the United States Military Enlisted Rank Insignia, a subpage of the official web site of the U.S. Department of Defense.

The page displays photos of the rank insignia for all branches of the government, from the lowest- to the highest-ranked enlisted service members. These photos, however, only showed the insignia of enlisted men and did not include officers' insignia. Luckily, at the top of the page we noticed a link to Officer Rank Insignia.

We wondered if the rank insignia was different during World War II. We decided to search on "World War II Rank Insignia" to see if we could find any web sites that focused on World War II. Unfortunately, we didn't find anything that focused exclusively on WWII insignia, but we did find two other sites worth a look.

United States Armed Forces Rank Insignia is cross-referenced for easy navigation, while U.S. Military Uniform Decorations includes photos of insignia for distinguished service or performance, meritorious service or performance, and Presidential citation.
