Dear Yahoo!:
Who was the last man on the moon?
Arontes
Zion, Illinois
Dear Arontes:
First man on the moon? That's common knowledge. Last man on the moon? Hmmmm. We turned to the Yahoo! search box to find the answer and entered "last man on moon." The search resulted in one relevant web site.

The site is a companion piece to the book Last Man on the Moon, written by astronaut Eugene "Geno" Cernan. On December 11, 1972, Cernan, the commander of Apollo 17, became the last man to step foot on the moon. In his own words, "I lowered my left foot and the thin crust gave way. Soft contact. There, it was done. A Cernan bootprint was on the moon."

Eager to learn more, we returned to our search results and clicked on the link to the web page matches. We leafed through the pages, which confirmed our earlier finding.

Next, we gravitated over to the Yahoo! Individual Astronauts > Cernan, Eugene A. category and found an interesting biography of the moonwalking man. In addition to leaving the last lunar bootprint, Cernan also spent the most time on the moon.

A final search on Apollo 17 lead us to a NASA page outlining the last Apollo project. We learned that the goals of this final moon mission included conducting surface and lunar orbit experiments, obtaining and returning lunar surface samples, and enhancing the capability for future astronaut lunar exploration. The mission was a success and all goals were achieved (though we could find little mention of future manned moon landings).
