Dear Yahoo!:
What was the date of the last execution in Canada?
Anileigh
Kingston, Canada
Dear Anileigh:
A search on "last execution in Canada" (with the quotation marks) turned up three web page matches, all of which looked rather promising.

The first result, A Brief History of Canada, provided us with this morbid fact: the last execution in Canada took place in Toronto on December 11, 1962. The site was not exactly forthcoming with details, but it answered your question.

Our next stop was an article from the Toronto Sun dated August 13, 1998. Titled "Death for cop killers," it provided us with some additional dates.

  • Parliament abolished hanging in 1976.
  • In 1987, Parliament voted 148-127 against restoring the death penalty.
We headed back to the search results and soon found ourselves in the Spamily's guest book. We had no idea where we were, but learned the circumstances and details of the execution nevertheless.

This site referenced the Canadian World Almanac:

The last execution in Canada was the double hanging on Dec. 11, 1962, of Ronald Turpin and Arthur Lucas, both convicted of killing police officers.
We checked this information with a Yahoo! search on "Ronald Turpin and Arthur Lucas" and received over 100 results corroborating our earlier findings.
