Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I ask tax questions on the Web and get a free reply from an expert?
Cathy
Parkersburg, West Virginia
Dear Cathy:
A number of popular financial sites feature tax advice columnists. While the odds of your burning tax-related question getting answered are slim, the column archives are a great place to start looking for answers.

  • Ask Smartmoney.com

The expert at Smartmoney.com covers a vast array of tax-related questions: How do I declare a stock worthless? How can I write off the purchase of a vehicle used for work? Feel free to submit a question of your own.

  • Kimberly Lankford at Kiplinger.com

Kim @ Kiplinger addresses a number of personal finance issues: home buying, college financial aid, early retirement. But any important monetary transaction will eventually involve your friends at the IRS. Check the searchable archive for details on this year's IRS reimbursement changes.

  • Bill Bischoff's "Tax Matters" at SmartMoney.com

Mr. Bischoff cranks out a no-nonsense weekly column that tackles the basics: employee stock options, self-employment, Roth IRAs, capital gains rates, and landlord advice. Don't miss the Boneheaded Tax Moves piece -- it's a mandatory read.

When all else fails, you may find some insight and helpful advice in the bustling tax message boards, such as those found on Yahoo! Message Boards. Post a question -- the boards have thousands of members.

A word of warning: When it comes to message board wisdom and "expert tips," skepticism is healthy.
