We knew of a few sites that focused on the Academy Awards, so we made Oscar.org, Oscar.com, and LittleGoldenGuy our first stops. Unfortunately, the search tools on Oscar.org and LittleGoldenGuy didn't offer much help, and Oscar.com is apparently being overhauled and will relaunch on February 1. Disappointed with our lousy luck, we returned to the top page of Yahoo! and tried a more specific search. Breaking down the question, we typed the most important words -- first oscar non-human -- into the search box and received hundreds of web page matches in return. According to several sites
(mainly personal web pages focusing on obscure facts) the first non-human to win an Academy Award was none other than Mickey Mouse. We returned to the top page of Yahoo! and searched on "mickey mouse and oscar." We were directed to a fan page, mickey-mouse.com, which claims that an Oscar was presented to Walt Disney in 1932 for the creation of Mickey Mouse. We double-checked this information at Oscar.org and found that Walt Disney did indeed win an award that year. We realized that a non-human has
never actually won an Oscar. Rather, people have won the Academy Award in recognition of creating a non-human character. Sorry, Lassie.
