Dear Yahoo!:
What are the pressure points to relieve a migraine?
Susan
Las Vegas, Nevada
Dear Susan:
We searched on Yahoo! using the keywords "migraine pressure points." Halfway down the first page of results, we found a piece about using acupressure to relieve headaches and migraine pain.

Provided by Holistic-online.com, a resource for "alternative, integrative, and mind-body medicine," this particular page advises the following: "Place your thumbs underneath the base of the skull on either side of the spinal column. Tilt your head back slightly and press upward for 2 minutes while breathing deeply." The page also offers specific pressure points depending upon where the pain is centralized.

We spent a bit of time weeding through the other search results and found, among other things, a newsgroup discussion on the subject of headache relief. The first email message, written by a migraine sufferer, includes a note about prevention:

When I'm in prodrome (the pre-headache stage of migraine, where parts of my field of vision start to disappear, and I become hypersensitive to noise), I have sometimes--not always--had luck interrupting the migraine with slow friction at the occiput (the point where the skull attaches to the spinal cord). By massaging there slowly, starting at the center and working out towards both ear simultaneously, I've occasionally been able to nip one in the bud.

We also found a tutorial from the folks at eHow on applying pressure during Shiatsu (the Japanese form of acupressure.) This led directly to another, more specific tutorial titled eHow to Use Shiatsu for a Migraine Headache. Each step in this helpful guide seems to use a different pressure point. Just be sure to read the warnings at the bottom of the page -- if you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, you'll want to avoid some of the steps.

Good luck!
