Dear Yahoo!:
What U.S. state has the largest area in national forests?
Laurel
Enola, Pennsylvania
Dear Laurel:
We started with a search on "largest area national forest" and hit paydirt with the first web page result.

The United States devotes 655 million acres (about 29 percent) of its total land area to forestlands. However, only 191 million acres of this land is located in the 156 national forests. With a whopping 22.2 million acres of national forests (the most in the U.S.), Alaska truly is the "Last Frontier."

The runners-up?

  • California (20.6 million acres)
  • Idaho (20.4 million acres)
  • Montana (16.8 million acres)
  • Oregon (15.7 million acres

A quick search on "national forests Alaska" led us to the terrific outdoor guide GORP (Great Outdoor Recreation Pages) and some other relevant forest facts.

Besides boasting the most acreage of national forests, Alaska is also home to the two largest national forests: the vast Tongass, which encompasses nearly 17 million acres and extends 500 miles, and the smaller but still sizeable Chugach, which covers almost 5.9 million acres.
