Ahhh, cryptozoology -- we love the word almost as much as the idea of a branch of science devoted to studying legendary creatures like Nessie or Sasquatch. We delved deep into the dark corners of the Cryptozoology category in the Yahoo! directory to bring you the following prime specimens. El Chupacabra, Spanish for "goatsucker,"
was originally reported in Puerto Rico but has been sighted throughout parts of the Caribbean, South America, and Florida. Under cover of the night, this vampire-like creature allegedly drains the blood from goats, chickens, and other animals, leaving behind bodies bearing "peculiar puncture marks" on their necks. Sea serpents are always popular and a large number of aquatic creatures similar to the Loch Ness Monster have been reported all around the world, ranging from Bessie in Lake Erie to Champ
in Lake Champlain to Ogopogo in Lake Okanagan. In 1966, two young couples in West Virginia supposedly encountered a strange gray creature with huge wings and glowing red eyes. This mothman pursued the couples through the night, flying after their car at speeds up to 100 miles per hour. Sightings of the strange insectoid monster were reported for about a year before dwindling off. And of course, there's your hometown boy, the Jersey Devil, memorialized by the hockey team. This winged creature is believed to dwell in the forests of southern New Jersey, where it kills livestock and causes crops to die.
These are just a few of our favorite things. Hungry for more? Tour the Enigma Cryptozoo to uncover more strange and unnatural creatures -- just stay out of the petting zoo.
