Faster than a flash of light, we flew to Yahoo!'s Fireflies category for a list of web sites about these illuminating insects. According to the Firefly Files, most species of the insect are found in warm, humid areas of the world. In the United States, flashing fireflies are usually found east of Kansas. Sightings in the western United States are extremely rare. On the Fireflies in Houston site, readers send in reports of firefly sightings all over the U.S., not just Texas. According to the reports, fireflies have been spotted as far west as rural
Utah and Montana, as well as in several areas in Colorado. The site also includes a link to the Fireflyer Companion, a newsletter all about the insects. We downloaded the PDF version of the newsletter's Spring 1996 issue, which had this to say about the habitat of fireflies: The firefly-richest region of North America probably occurs along a 30-mile-wide swath on the Florida-Georgia border from the Big Bend Coast to the Okefenokee Swamp. In a trivia section, the newsletter pointed out that the state of Georgia boasts the most species of firefly, and Boone, North Carolina, is the firefly capitol of the U.S. Unfortunately, we couldn't find
evidence of the critters in California. So if you want to see fireflies, head east!
