Dear Yahoo!:
Where can I buy an island?
Steppenwolf

Dear Steppenwolf:
We searched on the phrases "buy an island" and "private island" to find information on this Robinson Crusoe fantasy.

If you've got the money, it looks like you can buy an island almost anywhere in the world. Just keep in mind that even if you own the land, you aren't the ruler of a new country. Every island for sale is part of a sovereign country, and you'll be subject to that country's laws.

Articles in Time and Forbes magazines recommended Vladi Private Islands. This brokerage is run by Farhad Vladi, who claims, "If you can buy a car, you can buy an island." His web site lists islands all over the world and in a wide range of prices, from Nova Scotia's Long Island, selling for a modest CDN$48,000, to the Bahamas' Leaf Cay, going for a gargantuan USD$25 million.

Vladi may have sold 800 islands in 25 years of business, but he's not the only one in the business. Another web site, Private Islands Online, lists world islands for sale by a variety of brokers (there is some overlap between the two sites). Again, you can look at relatively affordable places, like Chockle Cap Island in Nova Scotia (CDN$50,000), or more pricey sites, such as Ile de Caille in Grenada (USD$10 million).

If you're not ready to commit to buying an island, both these sites list a few islands for rent too.
