Dear Yahoo!:
What was the first year the Ford Mustang was made?
Nick
Katy, Texas
Dear Nick:
This is a very legitimate question, since there has been some confusion over the year model of the first Mustangs.

According to Aria's Mustang Site in our bustling Mustang category, the first one rolled out on April 17, 1964, at the New York World's Fair. The basic model price was $2,368. Within a year, Ford had sold 417,000 models, most of which were hardtops.

The first cars are referred to as "1964 1/2" Mustangs by their owners. They're technically not 1964 models, since they weren't rolled out in October of 1963 with the rest of the new 1964 Ford cars. The company was eager to show off their new car during the World's Fair, so they unveiled it in April of 1964. However, the first Mustangs are not true 1965 models, because those were rolled out in October of 1964.

There are a few minor differences between the 1964 1/2 models and the 1965 models, hence the distinction. Ford wisely discontinued the "Pagoda Green" color option in the 1965 models, for instance.
