Dear Yahoo!:
What are the words to the theme song from Laverne and Shirley?
Lenny
Terre Hill, Pennsylvania
Dear Lenny:
"Schlemiel, schlimazel, hasenpfeffer incorporated!" Admittedly, we didn't know the exact words until we searched for an answer to your question. But we watched Laverne and Shirley back in the '70s and dug that catchy theme song too.

Searching on "Laverne and Shirley" led to the Laverne and Shirley category in the Yahoo! Directory, and to a number of web pages with details on this classic sitcom about two working-class girls from Milwaukee.

The Feenster Land fan site lists the complete lyrics for the theme song, titled "Making Our Dreams Come True." Cindy Grecco sang the song, and TV Land notes that the theme hit #25 on the charts in the summer of 1976. You can hear the entire song on the TV Land Tunes page. TV Land also has both versions of the Happy Days theme song -- of course, Laverne and Shirley began as a Happy Days spinoff.

Just what is the meaning of those opening lines, the ones Laverne and Shirley chant while skipping down the sidewalk? According to both the Kosher Nosh: Yiddish Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary, schlemiel is a habitual bungler and schlimazel is an unlucky person. Hasenpfeffer is a peppery rabbit stew of German origin. We'll leave the interpretation up to you.
