Dear Yahoo!:
Are there any web sites that show basic dance steps?
Richard
Big Bend, Wisconsin
Dear Richard:
The swinging Ballroom Dance category in Yahoo! features subcategories for popular dances like the Merengue, Salsa, Foxtrot, Waltz, and Samba. You'll find the most popular sites in each category listed above the alphabetical listings.

BallroomDancers.com, a top site in the category, is a professional resource for novices and competitive ballroom dancers alike. Choose "Learn a New Dance Step" from the pull-down menu on the front page to head to the Learning Center. There you can choose from three main styles: Ballroom, Latin, and Swing.

Opting for the International Cha Cha (not to be confused with the American) on a whim, we were given a general overview of the dance, some basic steps, a listing of suggested recordings, and three "syllabi" ranked in order of difficulty. The steps are shown as video clips, in the Real or QuickTime format. You'll also find 3D, computer-modeled diagrams in the Glossary of Dance Positions.

If you're on a slow connection and just want to print out the steps and figure them out in front of the mirror, head to Gotta Dance, "Asia's first Web resource on dancing." The site offers text directions to a wide variety of dances, ranging from a Viennese Waltz to a disco routine.

With a little patience, and some real-time practice, you'll be hitting the floor in no time.
