Dear Yahoo!:
Who pays for the remodeling on the TV show Trading Spaces?
Rebecca
Boynton Beach, Florida
Dear Rebecca:
For those who may not be familiar with the premise of the hit TV show, here's a quick overview: A pair of neighbors agree to "trade spaces" for two days and completely redecorate a single room in the other's abodes. At each team's disposal is one professional interior designer, an on-site carpenter, a paltry $1000 budget, and an unlimited supply of elbow grease and artistic license.

The challenge is seeing if the do-it-yourself teams can agree on a theme, stay under budget and on schedule, and create the breakfast nook or bedroom of their neighbors' dreams. Hampering that cause is the sometimes yin-yang dynamic between well-intentioned friends and bossy designers with differing visions of domestic grandeur.

We looked no further than the show's official site (which we found by typing "trading spaces" in the Yahoo! search box) to locate your answer. In the FAQ section, we learned that the show not only foots the $1000 tab for each home, but pays for any over-budget items. (Certain designers have been known to splurge on a few bolts of silk).

When folks agree to appear on Trading Spaces, they must sign a release acknowledging the show isn't responsible for any designs they don't like. So scoring a favorable designer is key.

Through all the blood, sweat, laughter, and tears, there are success stories where everyone goes home happy. But the show has some sob stories as well, including a bedroom-turned-Pullman car and walls coated with live moss.

If you are interested in risking domestic bliss and friendly relations with your neighbors for a shot at the stardom of cable TV, you can submit an application and put your taste and talent to the test.
