Dear Yahoo!:
How can you kill a pop-up window that refuses to close?
Gloria

Dear Gloria:
Those insidious pop-ups are designed to replicate every time you try to kill them, like some hideous alien virus. Short of closing your browser window, your best bet is to download an application that will nip them in the bud. As a quick browse through the Advertisement Filters Category in the Yahoo! Directory will attest, anti-pop-up programs are a regular cottage industry.

These programs have the added benefit of speeding up your browsing, since you don't have to download cumbersome graphics from the advertisements. One program picked at random, Ad Subtract Pro, also promises to freeze unwanted animation, silence obnoxious sounds, and let you see cookies that advertisers use to track your buying habits.

Buyer beware! Some of these privacy programs "wash" your web content through central databases, which seems fairly dubious. Our Internet Privacy Category features a primer from the Electronic Frontier Foundation that covers the basics on protecting your privacy online.

There are also some free programs out there designed to kill the dreaded pop-up. Panicware offers a free version of its popular Pop-Up Stopper. Or you might want to try using a browser such as Mozilla, which allows you to disable scripts that "Open unrequested windows." Happy ad-free browsing!
