Dear Yahoo!:
Traditionally, the winners of the America's Cup host the next race. Since Switzerland won this year, where will this land-locked nation hold the event?
Andrew
Omaha, Nebraska
Dear Andrew:
The America's Cup returned to Europe for the first time in 152 years after Switzerland's Team Alinghi soundly defeated a (literally) shattered Team New Zealand in Auckland this past March.

Will the next race be held in Lake Geneva? No. It's up to the Swiss syndicate and head Ernesto Bertarelli to choose the location for the next race. While over 60 cities have expressed interest, there are currently eight European cities in the running to host the next America's Cup in 2007. The competing cities are as follows: Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Marseille, Naples, Porto-Cervo, Elba, and Lisbon. So while Switzerland won, it'll be Spain, France, Italy, or Portugal who will host.

The list will be whittled down to four in May. According to the official site of the America's Cup, a final decision must be delivered some time before December 15, 2003. Our very own America's Cup category in the Yahoo! Directory hosts yachting journalist Paul Rivard's site, which provides an excellent historical background on the race.
