Dear Yahoo!:
Is there a web site that can teach me how to knit?
Grandma
Dear Grandma:
There are several web sites that can teach you how to knit. Our Knitting and Crocheting category in the Yahoo! Directory is jam-packed with dozens of how-to sites. Here are a few of the more popular introductory resources:

  • Tom Farrel's Learn How to Knit is a simple step-by-step guide that features helpful photographs of your friendly host elbow-deep in yarn. Tom recommends starting with metal needles, and an inexpensive, worsted weight yarn.

  • Learn to Knit & Crochet addresses the difference between knitting and crocheting. Crocheting requires a single hook that is used to make rows of similar loops, while knitting requires two needles to create a number of different kinds of stitches.

  • Vardhman Yarn's How to Knit kicks things off with a basic "Casting On" tutorial. This is the first slipknot that serves as the foundation of your knitting odyssey.

  • Vogue Knitting, a glossy periodical dedicated to the "rapidly growing hand knit market," hosts a friendly tutorial with excellent illustrations of the basic knots. You'll also find a glossary of abbreviations and terms.

With some yarn, needles, and a little determination, you'll be on your way to a lifetime of free sweaters and nosewarmers in no time.
