According to the American Heritage Dictionary in Yahoo! Reference, a gelding is any castrated animal, but the term usually refers to a male horse. The 3-year-old gelding Funny Cide rallied from third place to seize the lead in the upper stretch to win this year's Kentucky Derby by a length. He then went on to blow away the competition at the Preakness Stakes, setting himself up for a potential triple crown. Funny Cide was the first
gelding to win the Kentucky Derby in 74 years, and the first to win the Preakness since Prairie Bayou in 1993. Come June 7, 2003, he may become the first triple crown winner since Affirmed won it in 1978. Funny Cide has inspired a lot of enthusiasm amongst horse racing fans because, by definition, he won't be whisked away to a lucrative career of studding after winning a few big races.
