Dear Yahoo!:
How many babies were born in the U.S. on September 11, 2001?
Vickie
Piedmont, South Carolina
Dear Vickie:
While tragedy unfolded, life continued. Over 10,000 families in the United States welcomed a new baby into the world on September 11, 2001.

Recently, 28 of these children gathered with their families in New York City to celebrate their second birthday. Many of them are featured in the new book Faces of Hope: Babies Born on 9/11 by author Christine Pisera Naman. Naman, who gave birth to a son on that date, recalls, "It was an easy day to give up and say, 'Good Lord, what are we doing?' But then you look at your baby and you see a good reason to go on."

Some other relevant figures:

  • Number of orphans created by the attacks -- 1,300.
  • Number of babies born after 9/11/01 who lost their fathers in the tragedy -- 17.
  • Percentage increase in the number of babies born in New York City nine months after the attacks -- 20%.
