According to reigning fan site Mister Ed Online, the voice of Mister Ed was Allan "Rocky" Lane, a veteran actor who cut his teeth playing cowboys in westerns. Initially, Mr. Lane was embarrassed at the idea of playing a horse, and asked for his name to be kept off the credits. The credits ran "Mister Ed...Himself." Lane changed his mind after the show proved a hit, but the producers stuck with the credit. This was before the ascendancy of the Screen Actors Guild. The real name of the horse who portrayed Mister Ed was Bamboo Harvester. Alan Young, who played Wilbur Post, told a
television interviewer that the show's producers prompted Bamboo Harvester to flap his lips with peanut butter. This was not true -- the horse had a piece of nylon mesh placed under his top lip. He was trying to dislodge it. This was before the ascendancy of PETA. There's talk of a remake of Mister Ed, which originally aired from 1961 to 1965. The new show will have more of a Chris Rock feel. Stay tuned.
